This month I want to highlight an article by Michael Race, What is Trump Media’s Truth API and why is it controversial?. This article discusses the Truth Social fast access API that recently launched, giving paying companies near real-time access to Truth Social posts before the posts hit the app’s news feed.
Contrary to what my last couple years of posts imply, there are still stories in tech that aren’t AI-related; this fast access API story is some good, old-fashioned skullduggery adjacent to tech. Seeing this story reminds me that even with established technologies, companies can still find ways to create unique offerings. Personal feelings about this story aside, I appreciate there are still innovations to be had, even in domains that may feel stale, and nudge me to continue to look for innovations everywhere at work, not just the flashy, new spots.
Personal feelings back on – I am sad that this API exists. I think it’s important to shine light on bad behaviors that fall under the banner of maybe technically legal but definitely not good for society. My hope is this innovation is short-lived, or is made more readily accessible (e.g., not gated by $100K/month) such that the abusability of this API is minimized.

“…many other data providers, news organisations and stock exchanges currently operate similar services, providing a ‘precedent’ for TMTG. However…’There’s a different story when it comes to ethics.’”
