This month I want to highlight an article, 3 Mistakes I Made as an Engineer, but Had To Become a Manager To See, by Ryan Peterman. In this article, the author describes three quality lessons he learned through his experience, and I wanted to add additional context to the first learning: “People problems are as important as ‘real’ problems.” As technical leaders, our role is not to create software, but instead to design and upkeep a machine that creates software. The machine comprises people, mechanisms, and technologies, and each element must operate harmoniously to realize the best outcomes; through this machine, we can then create products and services that delight our customers. This article is a good reminder that our people are vital to our success, and we must create an environment that grows and supports our people.

“…people problems affect the team even before anyone decides to leave. Having motivated, happy teammates is critical to getting things done. For that reason, people problems are just as important as problems with the code itself.”
