This month I want to highlight an article, Good engineers train their skills – great engineers improve their mindset, by Juraj Malenica. In this article, the author takes time to describe three learning phases (Adjustment, Intuition Building, Stagnation), which gives us a model to self-identify our current state, and evaluate how we feel about it. These learning phases are applicable in all stages of our career. Through recognition and reflection we are capable of making informed personal decisions that optimize for our engagement and enthusiasm. You may be in an exciting adjustment phase, eager to absorb new information, or you may be in a stagnation phase where new learnings are few and far between; these are normal, natural states we cycle through as we grow our skills and knowledge. A healthy takeaway from this article is to pay attention to your learning phase, and make positive changes if you find yourself in a phase that doesn’t match your goals.

“…it is very helpful to adopt a growth mindset. This mindset helps us see our capabilities as expandable, and our failures as learning opportunities that empower growth. By doing so, we can look positively at all the hard work that is required in order to master something new.”
