This month I want to highlight a named problem, The XY Problem. The XY problem is asking about your attempted solution rather than your actual problem. The XY problem has been documented since the 1980s, and I continue to see it today. It is natural for us to work towards solutions and ask for help as we go. It is also natural for us to help others solve their problems, when asked. Whenever stuck, remember to take a step back and ask “what problem am I trying to solve?” Oftentimes this simple question will surface the true nature of the issue, and help you arrive at more appropriate solutions.

“A client has asked me to build and install a custom shelving system. I’m at the point where I need to nail it, but I’m not sure what to use to pound the nails in. Should I use an old shoe or a glass bottle?
How would you answer the question?”
